What am I good at? This is one question that many people ask themselves but never really find the answer to. It is important to ask yourself this, especially when you are choosing a career. Basing your career on the things you do best is one of the most important keys to career success. This question will also come up in interviews as employers would like to know what you can do best for their organizations.


It is also important to know what you are good at so you can further develop this skill. Today’s leaders in business, music, entertainment, art, and politics (and all the other industries you can think of) all got there by developing their true skills and interests. The biggest problem, however, is finding out what exactly you are good at in the first place.
So why is it so hard to answer this question? 


1. You dismiss or ignore skills that are actual answers to ‘what am I good at’.


Most people say that they do not have any skills, or do not know what skills they have. This is because they do not consider the things they do well as actual skills. They don’t think much of them. Could they be clues to answering the ‘what am I good at’ question? The Business Insider offers a simple 2-step guide that will help you figure out your skills:
• Write down ideas about what you can do well, and what comes to you naturally
• Look for patterns by grouping the answers into simple categories.

2. You tend to ignore compliments.


Sometimes, when you do something very well, people will give positive comments about your work. It is easy to dismiss such compliments, sometimes subconsciously. If you listen to these compliments, they will point out exactly what you are good at.


3. You may like doing a lot of things, but not know what you like most.


This is a common problem for almost everyone. Every person usually can do a number of things well. This may make it difficult to determine what exactly they are good at. Forbes highlights a few ways to help you find out exactly what you are good at:
• Find out what has helped you thrive and prosper in your life
• Identify what gives you strength and conversely what makes you feel drained
• Go back to your childhood and remember what made you unique
• Note the compliments that you tend to overlook

4. You don’t really know what skills helped you grow as a person.


Life will often present you with challenges. You must overcome them using a variety of solutions. People apply different skills every day to get out of difficult situations. It is, therefore, sometimes difficult to pick out one particular skill as the strongest one.


5. You forget what you were good at as a child which could be the answer to ‘what I am good at’.


During childhood, most of us could do some things that set us apart from other children. It could be singing well, drawing, inventing scientific projects, or leadership. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the legendary composer started off at just 3 years old. He traveled with his sister and performed in numerous royal balls and concerts.


Richard Branson, CEO of the Virgin group became an entrepreneur at 11 years old when he bred and sold pet parakeets. Daymond John, the CEO and founder of FUBU, started by customizing pencils and selling them to girls in his first grade! He decided to develop his creative entrepreneurial skills and today has a net worth estimated to be just over $250 million.


6. You do what other people expect you to do.


Some people end up in careers they didn’t choose because they want to please others. This is common when parents have pre-planned futures for their children, sometimes even before they are born. In the struggle to please such parents and society, you forget to nurture your natural skills. You are forced to overlook what you are really good at. Such skills may fade or even disappear completely if not utilized.

Sometimes, we are not good at what we want to do. Other times, we are good at something but don’t want to do it. One may take a job that does not use his or her skills because it pays well. In order to achieve a successful career, you have to start by finding out what you are good at. Look beyond the present; remember what excited you as a child. As mentioned above, some of the most successful people in today’s business world started their businesses as children. What am I good at? Everybody is good at something. People who say that they do not have any skills or interests have just not discovered them yet…
